That is awful. I am so sorry you had to go through that. I too have put a claim in for DLA. I enclosed two letters from my Consultant explaining about my decline in health and how this has affected me. He advised me to claim for the DLA. Had letter to say there may be a delay as they are going to ask my GP for a report. Obviously my GP is more qualified to talk about my RA than the Consultant Rheumy. I don't think these people have any idea what RA is and when you are suffering so much, the last thing you need is someone doubting you.
I sincerely hope after everything you went through that they accept your claim.
Take care

No wonder you feel angry! Shocking, humiliating and degrading. What a way to treat people who are unwell and suffering from a chronic, debilitating illness. I hope that you are all right now Sylvia and that you get what you are entitled to.

So very sorry to hear this distressing tale.
Usually one fills in the forms at home and just sends them in.
Love, Amanda

He was elderly, probably semi-retired but was ok and made a comment along the lines, "I was definitely a genuine case". I think its because you are a new claimant that they send a Dr. out, to check you're not making a false claim, which I'm sure you're not, but its what they have to do to protect the rest of us. Carol

Hi, I too had to have a medical when my DLA was originally refused and I went to appeal. I saw a panel which consisted of a doctor, someone from the DWP and an independant person. When I walked in they looked at me in amazement and said why are you hear? They were really shocked that my original claim had been refused and said that they had read it and could not understand them. The lady from the DWP said she was really sorry and they booked me a taxi and paid for it for me to go home. I got it approved two days later.
I think they have to ask you these questions but hopefully you will get your due. I agree it is degrading but I suppose they have to sort out the ones who abuse the system. I think that when you become disabled you have to get used to this type of treatment as it happens all the time.

well here i am again, i got report today and wont get DLA as my RA is only mild to moderate says the doctor, i will not apply again as i cannot go through all that hassle again there was no mention of my blue badge or podiatry aids for my shoes or that i need help when in the shower or pain in hands when lifting things, he said in report i can go walk round asda, i told him my daughter takes me to asda for messages and coffee he asked if i was depressed i said no none of doctors i have seen thought i was depressed but he wrote in report he thought i was depressed what chance does anyone have, no wonder people dont claim benifit if this is what happens at end of this, this has been ongoing since sept 2009 sylviaxxxx

So sorry you haven't been awarded DLA Sylvia, it really is disgusting. Surely you should get the low care rate which is when you can't prepare a meal......if your hands are affected you can't peel/chop veg etc or lift heavy pans. That's all I get. I did try a couple of years ago to get it upgraded but it was a shambles and I ended up complaining to the chief executive and got a profuse apology. Mind you , they still didn't upgrade the DLA! I get low care indefinitely and I will stick at that whatever happens, no way will I put myself through that again. The whole system needs an overhaul. Why should some bored, able bodied person sat behind a desk decide what we can and can't do, regardless of what is written on the forms?

Hi Sylvia, i too have been through all this, i agree it is very degrading. I get low rate for personal care for help with meals, pans etc. I appealed for a mobility component but didn't get anywhere, despite help from my local welfare rights dept. I am surprised you can't get it at low rate for the help with cooking though.

PS The CAB are usually very helpful and friendly, i have been to them before for benefit advice, i was advised to go there by my GP.
